The outdoor holding area at the Aquatic Animal Health Lab is fully fenced and secured. The area houses two (a) 12 foot diameter tanks, (b) 2 x 5 diameter tanks, (c) 9 x 4 ft diameter tanks and (d) 35 x 3 ft diameter tanks. Researchers may bring fish into the facility from outside sources such as hatcheries. The fish are held in the outdoor area for acclimation until they are transferred to the indoor experimental area. Alternatively, the AAHL also has the capability to breed and rear fish on site for experimental purposes.
No infectious agents are used in this area of the facility, but non-disease related research can take place there. The outdoor area provides fish with natural environmental conditions such as light and ambient temperatures so fish can use these cues to develop or spawn, etc.
